– APPLICATION INSTRUCTIONS –

(INSTRUCCIONES EN ESPAÑOL AQUI)

Your application must include three items: 1) a video, 2) a resume, and 3) an essay.

VIDEO

  • Record a 2 minute video of yourself, answering the question, “Why do you want to participate in the Windrose Project’s DC Leadership Summit?” Treat the video like a job interview, and conduct yourself professionally. Then, upload your video to YouTube, and share a link upon submitting your application.

RESUME

  • Submit your one-page résumé, outlining your level of education, work experience, personal accomplishments, and any other relevant experience in volunteer organizations, extra-curricular activities, sports, etc. Click here for example formats.

ESSAY

  • Carefully read the excerpt below, and then respond to the questions that follow in a well-written essay:

Excerpt from Federalist Paper #2, by John Jay — “With equal pleasure I have as often taken notice that Providence has been pleased to give this one connected country to one united people–a people descended from the same ancestors, speaking the same language, professing the same religion, attached to the same principles of government, very similar in their manners and customs, and who, by their joint counsels, arms, and efforts, fighting side by side throughout a long and bloody war, have nobly established general liberty and independence. This country and this people seem to have been made for each other, and it appears as if it was the design of Providence, that an inheritance so proper and convenient for a band of brethren, united to each other by the strongest ties, should never be split into a number of unsocial, jealous, and alien sovereignties. Similar sentiments have hitherto prevailed among all orders and denominations of men among us. To all general purposes we have uniformly been one people each individual citizen everywhere enjoying the same national rights, privileges, and protection. As a nation we have made peace and war; as a nation we have vanquished our common enemies; as a nation we have formed alliances, and made treaties, and entered into various compacts and conventions with foreign states.”

  • Questions:
    • Our national motto is E. Pluribus Unum, which means “out of many, one” in Latin. According to John Jay, how did 13 independent colonies come together and form one country: the United States of America?
    • How divided do you think America is today? How do we build unity again?
  • Your essay must be double-spaced and no more than 750 words.
  • Before submitting, please edit your essay to reflect strong grammar and clear language.
  • Combine your resume and essay and save as one PDF file for submission.

Give yourself plenty of time to complete your application, so that you can submit your best effort! Above all else, we are looking for individuals who display passion, leadership potential, and critical thinking. If you have any additional questions, check out our frequently asked questions page.
